I like where HBO is going with this series. Great behind the scenes footage.
Floyd Mayweather vs Miguel Cotto Preview
February 8, 2012I go a little in depth with the May 5th match up, but no prediction (yet)
Manny Pacquiao vs Timothy Bradley Set For June 9th
February 6, 2012
As another year passes and both Pacquiao and Mayweather have yet to meet face to face in the ring, we have to (or do we) settle for the next best thing. In the case of Floyd Mayweather, he’s going on to fight Miguel Cotto at 154lbs which by some is seen as an easy fight while others believe this is a very risky fight for Floyd. Pacquiao on the other hand has a victory over Cotto from their 2009 fight in which Pacquiao stopped Cotto in 12 rounds. A rematch was put on the table by Top Rank head Bob Arum but was turned down by Cotto for Pacquiao’s demand of the fight being at 147 where Cotto hasn’t fought since their last fight. Timothy Bradley is undefeated and recognized as the #1 140lber in the last couple of years with wins over Lamont Peterson, Devon Alexander, & Joel Casamayor. Without question this is a huge step up in competition for Bradley.
From RingTV:
RingTV.com has learned that WBO welterweight beltholder Manny Pacquiao and WBO junior welterweight titleholder Tim Bradley have agreed to terms for a clash that will take place on June 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Last week, RingTV.com reported that Top Rank CEO Bob Arum was to meet with Pacquiao’s adviser, Michael Koncz, and Bradley’s manager, Cameron Dunkin, in an effort to finalize terms for the bout.
Arum, Koncz and Dunkin convened during meetings in San Antonio, Tex. over this past weekend, where Arum was promoting Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s HBO-televised unanimous decision in defense of his WBC belt opposite Marco Antonio Rubio, and Nonito Donaire’s made his 122-pound debut with a split-decision win over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. for the WBO’s vacant junior featherweight belt at the Alamodome.
The Pacquiao-Bradley agreement was not made, however, until Monday, and it comes in the wake of WBA junior middleweight beltholder Miguel Cotto having been chosen last Wednesday by Floyd Mayweather Jr. as his May 5 opponent.
Rest of the Story: Pacquiao vs Bradley Set for June 9th
RIP Angelo Dundee
February 2, 2012An incredibly sad day for Boxing as legendary trainer of Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, and a host of other greats died Wednesday at the age of 90. He had recently re-opened the famous 5th Street Boxing Gym in Miami where Ali trained frequently. I’m sure we’ll see a good homage during this weekend’s HBO double header. Here’s one of his last interviews from a couple months back. RIP
Mayweather vs Cotto Set For May 5th
February 2, 2012
I guess I was foreshadowing a bit? May 5th is locked in for what some are considering a fight a little too late in the making pitting undefeated Floyd Mayweather against Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto. The fight will take place at 154lbs for Cotto’s WBA title which will be Floyd’s second time at the weight class since beating Oscar De La Hoya in 2007. With the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight once again hitting road blocks, the May 5th date was stamped by Floyd as he had to venture out for a new opponent with Cotto fitting the bill after going out on his own finishing his tenure with longtime promoter Top Rank, who ironically is Mayweather’s former promoter. It’s likely HBO will cover the fight on PPV along with their now popular 24/7 Series.
As a Boxing fan, this is a fight I personally would have like to have seen a few years ago, but I have a feeling we’re going to be in for a few surprises come May 5th. Stay tuned!
Mayweather vs Cotto: 2nd Best Option?
January 25, 2012
Mayweather vs Pacquiao has become one of the most talked about, yet ridiculed rivalries in sports today with the on going back and forth posturing and demands that seems to be pushing both fighters away more than making the fight Boxing fans have been waiting for. With talks of Pacquiao not fighting until June and Mayweather sticking to his guns for a May 5th fight, one guy is sitting back in quite possibly the best position he’s been in his whole career, and that is Miguel Cotto. Fresh off his victory over Antonio Margarito, the question remained on whether Cotto would resign with his longtime promoter Top Rank. Names such as Chavez Jr and a Pacquiao rematch were supposed to be incentives for him resigning. Instead, he’s chosen to be his own promoter and have the ability to work outside of Top Rank who have more times than not held in house fights.
For Floyd Mayweather, substitute names such as Robert Guerrero and Saul Alvarez have been at the forefront, but with a slight hint to a possible showdown with a now free agent Miguel Cotto, who in comparison to both guys brings bigger dollar signs, which Floyd loves more than anything.
Fight News reported this earlier about the potential showdown:
The announcement that WBA super welterweight king Miguel Cotto and WBC welterweight monarch Floyd Mayweather Jr. will meet on May 5 could occur in the next few days. Cotto, now a free agent, had several meetings with long time promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank, but no agreement was reached. The Sport Press learned that Golden Boy Promotions, who does business with Mayweather Jr., made a juicy offer to Cotto immediately after efforts failed to make a bout between the ‘Pretty Boy’ and Manny Pacquiao. In fact, José Sulaimán, president of the WBC, announced in Mexico that Mayweather Jr and Pacquiao will fight in November in Qatar, United Arab Emirates, therefore the date of May 5 is free for Mayweather Jr to face Cotto.
Boxing fans will remember also that both Mayweather and Cotto were once on a path to facing one another as the top 2 Welterweights in the sport prior to Cotto’s loss to Margarito. Though by some it may be a fight too late in the making, it’s those fights that sometimes tell us more about where a fighter truly is in their career. The next few days shall be very interesting.
