Tragedy Hits Boxing Over Memorial Day Weekend

The weekend started out great with Carl Froch’s upset victory over Lucian Bute (watch here), but tragedy struck even harder as news got around that former champion Johnny Tapia was found dead in his home in New Mexico. Tapia gained titles at Flyweight, Bantamweight, and Featherweight with his most notable fight being against Paulie Ayala which was regarded “Fight of the Year”. Tapia was 45 years old.

The following day we also got word that former Welterweight and Jr Middleweight Champion Paul “The Punisher” Williams was involved in a motorcycle accident which severed his spinal cord leaving Williams paralyzed from the waist down. Williams was headed towards a Sept date against rising star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez which would’ve been Canelo’s toughest challenge to date. Williams’ most noted fights are his Welterweight title win against Antonio Margarito and his Fight of the Year candidate against Sergio Martinez. Williams is scheduled for surgery this Wednesday.
