Margarito vs Mosley Heading Towards Late January ’09
October 21, 2008
I didn’t want to post anything until I got confirmation. But it seems as if the fight is a go for late January pitting current Welterweight champ Antonio Margarito in his first fight since dethroning Miguel Cotto last July against former Welterweight & Jr Middleweight champ Shane Mosley who’s coming off a KO victory over Ricardo Mayorga. There’s no word yet if the fight will be at 154lbs or 147lbs or if the fight itself will be on HBO or HBO PPV.
For me, it’s a tough fight to call. Many will compare Margarito’s fight last July against Cotto to this upcoming fight with Margarito being the aggressor and breaking Mosley down. Contrary to that belief, Mosley in my opinion takes a better punch than Cotto (who I believe is still the better boxer) and against Margarito I can see Mosley trying to trade with him. Mosley isn’t as technically sound as many have made him to be over the years (He’s more of a puncher than anything) so I don’t believe he’ll try to box Margarito more than him just outgunning him with his speed. But on the same token, Margarito will keep coming after Shane. His relentless style is always trouble if you’re stamina isn’t up to par as proven with his past opponents.
It should be an interesting fight to say the least and could be step 1 to the highly anticipated rematch between Cotto & Margarito in June (if Cotto gets passed his Feb 14th opponent).
