…at least I think so, and well deserved. Since Money Mayweather departed the sport (for now) a new P4P #1 needed to be crowned and undoubtedly it was between Light Heavyweight & Super Middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe & the Filipino Assassin Manny Pacquiao. Well this past Saturday night, Manny made it very clear who the real #1 fighter in the world is as he stepped up to Lightweight (135lbs) for the 1st time to face champion David Diaz. To say it was totally 1-sided is an understatement. Manny’s speed and constant pressure was too much for Diaz to handle (who had a nasty cut over his right eye) eventually dropping him in the 9th round to become the new WBC Lightweight champion.

The question now is, who’s next?? There’s obvious talks of a Juan Manuel Marquez vs Pacquiao trilogy that would take place at Lightweight, but Marquez has a date with Joel Casamayor is September that he shouldn’t be looking past. Some other names like Ricky Hatton & Oscar De La Hoya have come up as possible future opponents, but the only fight that makes a bit of sense would be a fight with Hatton considering Oscar is hoping (or waiting) on Miguel Cotto to beat Antonio Margarito next month which will set up Oscar’s Dec 6th farewell.
I’d love to see Hatton vs Pacquiao. But this is all 2009 talk for now…
